DTF transfers have taken the custom apparel world by storm — and for good reason. Whether you're decorating t-shirts for your business, team, or personal brand, DTF gang sheets give you full-color, high-detail prints without the setup costs of screen printing. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is DTF Printing?
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. In DTF printing, your design is printed directly onto a special film using high-quality inks, then a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied and cured. The result is a transfer that can be applied to fabric using a heat press.
Unlike screen printing, there are no screens to create and no color limitations. Unlike sublimation, DTF works on virtually any fabric color — including dark garments — and on cotton, polyester, and blends.
What Is a Gang Sheet?
A gang sheet is a single large sheet of film — typically 22 inches wide — that contains multiple designs or multiple copies of the same design arranged together. Instead of ordering one transfer at a time, a gang sheet lets you pack as many designs as possible onto one sheet to maximize value.
For example, if you need 10 copies of your logo, 5 copies of a chest print, and 3 sleeve graphics, all of those can be arranged on one gang sheet. You pay for the sheet, not per individual design — which makes it extremely cost-effective.
What Can DTF Transfers Be Applied To?
DTF transfers work on a wide range of fabrics and materials, including:
- Cotton — t-shirts, hoodies, hats
- Polyester — athletic wear, jerseys, performance shirts
- Cotton/poly blends — the most common apparel fabric
- Denim — jackets, jeans, bags
- Canvas — tote bags, shoes
- Leather and faux leather — patches, accessories
DTF does NOT work well on waterproof or highly textured fabrics like nylon shells or thick neoprene.
How Do I Apply a DTF Transfer?
Applying a DTF transfer at home or in your shop is straightforward with a heat press:
- Preheat your heat press to 300–320°F (150–160°C)
- Pre-press your garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles
- Position your transfer on the garment, ink side down
- Press for 15–20 seconds with firm, even pressure
- Peel the film while hot (hot peel) or allow to cool first (cold peel) — check your specific transfer instructions
- Re-press with parchment paper for 5–10 seconds to lock in the finish
That's it. The result is a soft, vibrant, full-color print that washes well and holds its color.
How Do I Set Up My Artwork for a Gang Sheet?
When submitting artwork for a gang sheet at Real Sticky, keep these tips in mind:
- File format: PNG with transparent background is ideal. PDF and AI files also work great.
- Resolution: 300 DPI minimum for sharp prints
- Color mode: RGB for the most accurate color reproduction with DTF
- Sizing: Let us know the exact dimensions you want each design printed at
- Arrangement: You can arrange the designs yourself in a layout, or send us the individual files and tell us how many of each you need — we'll lay out the gang sheet for you
How Long Do DTF Transfers Last?
When applied correctly and cared for properly, DTF transfers are very durable. To maximize the lifespan of your prints:
- Wash garments inside out in cold water
- Avoid bleach and harsh detergents
- Tumble dry on low or hang to dry
- Do not iron directly on the transfer
With proper care, you can expect 50+ washes without significant fading or cracking.
